Liquid extracts
Tinctures
Herbal tinctures are concentrated extracts, prepared by infusing specific plant parts or mushrooms into a solvent made of spring water and alcohol, ensuring long shelf stability. The amount of alcohol needed to make a tincture is herb-specific, depending on the type of active compounds the herb contains.
Organic grain alcohol is the preferred solvent in most cases as it is capable of dissolving many types of bioactive compounds or phytochemicals. This makes tinctures an efficient and reliable delivery agent for concentrated and therapeutic doses of plant medicines.
At Root Cause Herbals, every tincture is produced in-house, using botanicals of the highest quality. Some of them, locally wildcrafted cultivated with the help of the local greenhouse or cultivated in Fieke’s herb garden. Others are carefully sourced through various herb growers and herb dispensaries in Europe.
A daily tincture is divided into 2-4 smaller doses, as tinctures are very easily absorbed and easily broken down. The smaller doses will provide more consistent medicine and ensure for effective benefits. A typical adult dose is 10–15 ml a day, which makes the total amount of alcohol consumed to be minimal.
infusions & DECOCTIONS
Raw Herbs
Raw herbs, prepared as herbal infusions or decoctions, are an easy and effective way to deliver therapeutic doses of herbal medicine.
The simple method of infusing herbs in boiled water is often overlooked in the “West” as a medicinal practice.
When the herbs are tailored to the client’s specific needs, infused and consumed as recommended, herbal infusions can be highly effective.
In many Eastern herbal traditions, decoctions, made by boiling and simmering tougher plant materials like roots, seeds, and berries, are the preferred method of extraction.
capsules & EXTRACTED POWDERS
Powders
Plant powders come in two primary forms: finely ground herbs and concentrated steam-extracted powders. These powders allow for the delivery of larger doses of specific botanicals and offer flexibility in their use. They can be encapsulated for convenience and to improve taste compliance, or they can be mixed into a delivery agent, known as an anupan, such as honey or ghee.
Concentrated steam-extracted powders are commonly used in Eastern herbal traditions and are often derived from tougher plant materials like roots and mushrooms. These powders undergo an extraction process involving steam and heat, which allows the plants to release their active compounds in the powder and make them easily to absorb.
COMPRESSES & SALVES
Topical
Application
Topical herbal preparations are recommended to address various skin conditions, including: wound care, inflammation, bacterial or fungal infections, and neuropathies. These preparations can take different forms, depending on the specific condition being treated.
Water-based extractions, such as herbal washes, compresses, and poultices, can be applied directly to the skin to provide soothing effects promoting skin healing.
Oil-based extractions can be used in creams, salves, balms, and suppositories depending on the condition.
